WHAT IS
FOOT DROP?

Foot drop is caused by an underlying anatomical, neurological, or muscular condition in which there is an inability to lift the front part of the foot. It typically is experienced impacting one foot, but can affect both feet in certain cases. Depending on the cause of it in each individual, footdrop may be temporary or permanent.

Our providers conduct a complete evaluation of nerve testing to check the effectiveness of the Perogen Procedure on remedying a patient's instance of foot drop.

Symptoms may include:

  • Dragging the front of the foot when walking

  • Difficulty lifting one's toes or front part of the foot

  • Frequent incidence of stumbling or falling

  • The foot "slapping" the floor with each step taken

  • Pain, weakness or numbness in the toes or foot

  • Higher than normal bending of the knees and lifting of the thighs

  • Inability to voluntarily point the toes upward and/or move the ankle from side to side

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

Foot drop is caused by a weakness or paralysis of the lower leg muscles that lift the foot and can differ on a case-by-case basis. Causes may include:

  • Peripheral nerve disorders

    • This is the most common cause of foot drop.

  • Diseases dealing with progressive muscle weakness,
    such as muscular dystrophy

  • Damage or injury to nerve roots ("pinched nerve")

  • Injury to nerves in lower back

  • Injury or trauma to muscles that control the ankle and toes

  • Damage to nerves in the legs as a result of chronic disease such as diabetes
